Injectable Contraceptives lead to Osteoporosis
Women who use injectable contraceptives lose bone mineral density in the hip and lower spine, according to a study by experts from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (USA). The study, published in the January 2010 of ‘Obstetrics and Gynecology’, also revealed that women also experienced complications with this contraceptive – medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), especially in the hip. Moreover, these experts noted that the loss was greater among women smokers, those who were not mothers or whose daily calcium intake was less than 600 milligrams. The recovery of this loss takes time, especially in those women taking DMPA.
